Russia records the first human infection with the H5N8 bird flu strain :
A Russian official said on Saturday, February 20 that her country had recorded the first human case of the H5N8 strain of bird flu and had notified the World Health Organization. Anna Popova, head of the Russian Federal Authority for Consumer Rights, added on the official Russia 24 TV that Moscow informed the World Health Organization of this case "a few days ago, as soon as we were completely sure of our results."
She said that the case was transmitted from birds, and there was no indication that the infection was transmitted between humans so far.
Another strain of bird flu, H5N1, is known to have spread to humans.
Seven workers in a poultry factory in the south of the country were infected with the H5N8 strain when the disease appeared in the factory in December, the official said, adding that they are now in good health.
The head of the Russian Consumer Rights Commission, Anna Popova, confirmed that a human infection with the "H5N8" bird flu virus had been recorded in Russia.
"Today I want to report an important scientific discovery made by the scientists of the Russian Victor Center, where the first human case of H5N8 bird flu was confirmed in Russia," Popova said.
